Another year, another opportunity for World Team success as two wrestlers with Iowa ties have once again battled through USA Wrestling’s qualification process and find themselves a top the podium. Both David Carr and Tanner Sloan will each have an opportunity to represent our country later this summer at the Junior World Tournament.
This is the second straight year a member of the Iowa State wrestling team has earned the right to represent the U.S. overseas as Carr joined teammate Austin Gomez in accomplishing the feat of winning the Junior World Team Trials tournament. An injury prevented Gomez from being able to compete at the Junior World Championships last year, which means Carr will be Kevin Dresser’s first wrestler with a chance to compete at the World level.
Carr defeated Stanford’s Shane Griffith in two straight matches to claim the 74 kg World Team spot. The last time Carr made an age level World Team he brought home bronze from the 2016 Cadet World Championships.
Joining Carr on Team USA is the pride of Alburnett, Iowa Tanner Sloan who will represent the stars and bars at 97 kg. Sloan was one of the nation’s breakout redshirt wrestlers at 197 pounds for the South Dakota State Jackrabbits this past season and has continued his momentum on the freestyle circuit, now making the Junior World Team. Last month he reached the finals of the Junior US Open, but was defeated by Sam Schuyler. Sloan left no doubt this time around as he took care of Schuyler in two matches to claim his Junior World spot.
Two additional wrestlers made the Junior National team this weekend as well. At 79 kg future Northern Iowa wrestler Parker Keckeisen reached the best-of-three finals, but fell to Aaron Brooks for his spot on the World Team. Additionally, Iowa State standout Joel Shapiro finished third at 92 kg this weekend. Traditionally one of the Junior National team members recieves the opportunity to compete at the Junior Pan American Championships for Team USA.
