IRVING, Texas — The Big 12 Conference announced Wednesday afternoon that redshirt freshman Sam Colbray was named Co-Big 12 Wrestler of the Week with Utah Valley’s Kimball Bastian. This marks the second time in as many weeks that a Cyclone has earned the weekly Big 12 recognition. Last week, it wasredshirt freshman Ian Parker who received the honor.
Colbray picked up two dual victories this past weekend. He kicked off the weekend with a 5-3 decision in sudden victory over Cordell Eaton and then closed the weekend with a win by fall over No. 11 Nate Rotert, pinning the Jackrabbit in 5:22.
In his upset bid over Rotert, Colbray dominated the match. He led Rotert 5-3 in the third, scoring on two takedowns and an escape. Early in the third, Colbraybodied the SDSU 197-pounder flat to the mat with a whip over to secure the fall.
Colbray’s win in sudden-victory was instrumental in Iowa State’s 21-20 come-from-behind win at North Dakota State. He scored a late takedown in the third to send the match to overtime, tied 3-3. Colbray willed his way to the winning takedown, defeating the Bison 5-3. The win was one of five straight for ISU that led to the Cyclones’ largest comeback victory in school history.
