Iowa State fell in their second dual matchup at today’s Virginia Duals. After picking up a 21-18 upset over Virginia, the dual win streak was stopped at two as #10 Arizona State was victorious 25-13.
Arizona State was able to strike first with their ranked wrestler Ryan Millhof winning 16-1 over Sinjin Briggs.
After that the Cyclones started a run in the lightweights that began with Markus Simmons winning 4-0 over Ali Naser at 133 pounds. Naser was coming off a huge upset of the #2 ranked Jack Mueller (Virginia) in his previous match. Kanen Storr took care of business at 141 with a solid 9-4 decision over Nikko Villarreal, followed by yet another bonus point victory by Jarrett Degen. In his fourth straight win by bonus, this time over a ranked opponent, Degen knocked off #15 Josh Maruca.
The dual then took a turn the Sun Devil’s way with Arizona State reeling off three straight bonus point wins first from #7 Josh Shields winning 10-2 over Chase Straw, then another major decision, 15-7 #15 Anthony Valencia against Logan Breitenbach, followed by a fall from #1 Zahid Valencia over Danny Bush at 174 pounds. Sun Devil freshman Kordell Norfleet won a tight 3-2 battle over Dane Pestano, 3-2 to make it four straight wins for his team.
Picking up his first dual win of the season was sophomore Joe Teague, who downed Conner Small by a 5-1 score at 197 pounds. Unfortunately the decision wouldn’t be enough as that sealed the dual for Arizona State.
Finishing things off was Arizona State’s #4 Tanner Hall who won 3-1 over Marcus Harrington at 285 pounds.
