The Iowa Hawkeyes picked up their first away dual victory of the season tonight coming out on top 23-15 over the Scarlett Knights of Rutgers. It was the Hawks first of two Big Ten road duals on the weekend, and it also saw two new faces make their dual debuts. Redshirt freshmen Carter Happel and Alex Marinelli each relieved their first starts in the black and gold singlets in front of more than 6,000 fans in New Jersey.

Things started off with three straight wins for the Scarlett Knights, two of those coming by way of bonus. #2 ranked Nick Suriano eared a technical fall over Justin Stickley at 125, followed by a Scott DelVecchio major decision at 133 over Paul Glynn, and Mike Van Brill notched a narrow 3-2 decision against Happel.

From there Iowa rattled off four straight victories starting with Brandon Sorensen winning a ranked battle, 4-1 against Elezar DeLuca. We didn’t get our marquee battle at 157 pounds as U23 World Champion Richie Lewis bumped up to 165 pounds rather than facing Michael Kemerer at 157. The bump resulted a in a technical fall victory, 24-8 for Kemerer followed by Marinelli’s 6-4 decision at 165 pounds.

Moving into one of the toss up matches at 174 pounds Joey Gunther gutted out a tough, 5-4 victory at 174 pounds. Trailing 3-2 late in the match Gunther scored a third period takedown which also led to him picking up over a minute of riding time to push his lead to 5-3. Jordan Pagano managed an escape late in the match to make the final score 5-4.

Rutgers struck back at 184 pounds where their #11 ranked Nic Gravina came out on top of his match against Mitch Bowman by the score of 4-0. The Hawks were then able to close things out with a 6-3 Cash Wilcke decision followed by a Sam Stoll fall at heavyweight to win the dual 23-15.

Up next the Hawks will take on Maryland at 12:00 CT this Sunday.
