Joel Shapiro faces Illinois prep Danny Braunagel in All-American battle

shapriobraunagelJoel Shapiro of West Des Moines-Valley will be making his Conflict debut against Danny Braunagel of Illinois. Ranked #15 at 160 pounds by Flowrestling, Shapiro is a two-time state medalist for Valley, taking fifth as a freshman (126) and then third as a sophomore (145). Shapiro has since put on some weight, and has also been piling on the results this summer. He started with winning freestyle and Greco state titles at 170 pounds in May and followed that performance later that month by winning the Northern Plains Regional freestyle title and taking third in Greco. He downed a nationally ranked senior Travis Stefanik at Disney Duals, and added a seventh place finish at Cadet Greco Nationals in Fargo.

Like Shapiro, Braunagel’s summer results have finally paid off with the junior-to-be debuting in the Flowrestling rankings at #17. A large part of Braunagel’s ascent can be attributed to his fifth place showing in Fargo’s Cadet Nationals. Braunagel is also no stranger to Carver, as he was the Conflict at Carver’s 145-pound runner-up a year ago and he was fourth at the tournament the year prior to that.

ABOUT NIGHT OF CONFLICT:

The IAwrestle Team is proud to announce that this October we will be hosting a premier wrestling event titled “The Night of Conflict 2”, and will pit some of the best talent that the state of Iowa has to offer in a head-to-head battle for supremacy of each weight class. The event is scheduled for October 14, 2016 in Carver-Hawkeye Arena and it will take place the day before the preseason tournament, the Conflict at Carver, whose proceeds directly benefit the Hawkeye Wrestling Club.

Following weigh ins for the Conflict at Carver, wrestlers who have registered for the tournament will receive automatic admission into the Night of Conflict, free of charge. Tickets for the Night of Conflict will also be available for purchase at the door.
