One of the best open tournaments in the country took place over the weekend and the Cyclones and Panthers were right in the middle of it. The Cyclones placed five wrestlers and took home 4th place with 102 points UNI placed three and took home 14th place with 48.5 points. Minnesota won the event with 146 points but only one champion. The complete team standings can be found below.
Iowa State was led by 197 pounder Kyven Gadson, who took home first at 197. He had one pinfall and one major decision on the day. Gadson took down the sixth, third, and top seeded wrestlers at 197 to claim the title. The Cyclones also put four wrestlers in consolation finals, including Earl Hall, Gabe and Michael Moreno, and Tanner Weatherman. Both Moreno’s and Weatherman won their matches to take home third.
Overall it was a good day for ISU. They were in 4th place and had eight wrestlers still in it at the end of the first day. They had five guys make the quarterfinals and four make the semi’s. Although Gadson was the only one to make the finals, the other three wrestled back to the third place match with only one loss there. There is room for improvement though, as no wrestler except Earl Hall lost before the quarterfinals and made it through the wrestle back to the podium.
The Panthers were led by Dylan Peters, who would eventually take home 5th, Cooper Moore who took 4th, and Blaize Cabell, who took home 8th. They were the only three to medal for UNI. Both Peters and Moore were in the semifinals before dropping those matches. Moore would wrestle back for 4th, while Peters would injury default his next two matches for fifth.
The two squads met up in the final of the consolation bracket at 165. UNI’s Moore and Mike Moreno had a tight first period until Moreno got the pinfall for third place.
The complete results for both teams can be found below
UNI at Buena Vista Open:
Four Panthers grabbed titles at the Buena Vista Open yesterday. The field was mostly junior colleges and NCAA Division III schools but the Panthers had a nice showing. Winning titles were Josh Alber, Jake Koethe, Taylor Berger, and Adarios Jones. There were six Panthers in the finals (Gunnar Wolfensperger and Basil Minto in addition to the winners) and nine in the semifinals (Jesse Etherington, Chase Shedenhelm and Cody Krumwiede).
There was not a true third place winner, so if you dropped a match before the semifinals the best you could wrestle back for was fifth place, and UNI had three guys get to the 5th place match, with two victories in Bryce Meyer and Drew Foster.
Overall UNI placed all 13 wrestlers they brought, with all but one earning a place higher than eighth. The complete results for UNI can be found below.
