The UNI wrestling squad went to West Lafayette on Sunday to take on the Indiana Tech Warriors and the Purdue Boilermakers for their first two duals of the season. The Panthers split the matchups, sweeping the Warriors 44-0 and falling to Purdue 21-15. The win matched UNI’s longest dual winning streak, dating back to 1956-57. The loss to the Boilermakers was the first dual loss since a 37-7 loss to Oklahoma State in 2013.
The Panthers were led by Dylan Peters, who had two 1st period falls, Cooper Moore, who had two major decisions, Curt Maas had one major decision and one major, and Blaize Cabell, who had one pinfall and one decision.
The loss is definitely a disappointment for the Panthers, who looked to build on a undefeated dual record last year. Expectations weren’t necessarily that high for the upcoming year, what with 5 All-American’s graduating, but five starters had a disappointing day. While not believing in moral victories, 197 pounder Jared Bartel did take the 7th ranked wrestler to overtime before falling in the first tiebreaker.
The only major upset for the Panthers came when Danny Sabatello beat Levi Wolfensperger. Wolfensperger was an NCAA qualifier two years ago and sat most of last year because Joe Colon came back for this senior year.
The win was new Purdue’s Coach Tony Ersland’s first dual win at home.
On Saturday UNI had six wrestlers medal at the Joe Parisi Open, with Drew Foster taking home first place at 165 pounds in the Black Division.
UNI looks to bounce back from the loss with their home opener, a dual against Iowa Central Community College. The dual got pushed up a little bit to 1PM, because of the home football playoff game.
