WAAAY Too Early Look at Class 3A

Welcome to the WAY too early 2018-19 class 3A Iowa High School preview. While we haven’t contacted coaches yet, we thought that it would be fun to look back at who returns and give a few thoughts as we get closer to the season. THESE WEIGHTS AREN’T ACCURATE OF WHERE WRESTLERS WILL BE THIS SEASON.

There is a little movement of teams this year with Clear Creek Amana and Iowa City Liberty joining 3A and Perry and Carlisle making the move down to 2A.

106:

Returning Placewinners:
1st – Cullan Schriever – Mason City
2nd – Drake Ayala – Fort Dodge
4th – Devin Harmison – Southeast Polk
5th – Ethan Wood-Finley – Iowa City, City High
6th – Aidan Evans – Bettendorf
7th – Rheiner Stahlbaum – Johnston
8th – Austin Kegley – Prairie, Cedar Rapids

Returning Qualifiers:
Grant Harbour – Norwalk (Round of 12)
Corbin Broeker – Mount Pleasant (Round of 12)
Bryce Parke – Linn-Mar (Round of 12)
Tanner Wink – Lewis Central (Round of 12)
Ivan Thomas – Xaiver, Cedar Rapids
Bailey Roybal – Cedar Falls
Isaiah James – Dowling Catholic
Aime Mukiza – Des Moines North-Hoover

Cullan Schriever has been a mainstay at the top of the weight class the past two seasons.  The recent Iowa commit and #1 ranked wrestler in the nation at 113 (The Open Mat) told The Des Moines Register’s Cody Goodwin he plans to bump up to 120 for the upcoming season.  His finals opponent and Sebolt Wrestling Academy teammate, Drake Aylaa, will also likely bump up at least one weight class for his sophomore season. While we don’t rank freshman to start the season it shouldn’t take long for Waverly’s Aiden Riggins to make his way up towards the top. He comes into high school battled tested and will bat lead off for a very talented Go-Hawk lineup. Linn-Mar’s Brandon O’Brien weighed like 60 pounds last year (Not really) and will be a name that will creep towards the top. LOTS of freshman will be on the stand this year.

113:

Returning Placewinners:
1st – Nick Oldham – Valley, West Des Moines
2nd – Caleb Rathjen – Ankeny
3rd – Nick Miller – Waukee
5th – Carson Taylor – Fort Dodge
6th – Jakey Penrith – Cedar Falls
7th – Nate Kahoe – Des Moines Lincoln
8th – Caleb Helgeson – Johnston

Returning Qualifiers:
Noah Blubaugh – Ankeny Centennial (Round of 12)
Nick Hatcher – Prairie, Cedar Rapids (Round of 12)
Kaden Karns – Waterloo West (Round of 12)
Nick Walters – Sioux City North (Round of 12)
Zach Bitker – Marshalltown
Isaac Cretsinger -Dubuque Senior
Ryan Hancock – Pella

Oldham came out on top last year in one of the more exciting finals matches in 3A.  The Tiger senior is pound for pound one of the strongest wrestlers in the state. He is registered at 120 for the upcoming Super 32 tournament in North Carolina. Rathjen had a outstanding summer with a runner-up finish at Cadet Freestyle Nationals in Fargo. Almost all of the returning place-winners at this weight class should be moving up leaving this class open for Fort Dodge’s Drake Ayala, SEP’s Devin Harmison, Ethan Wood-Finley from Iowa City High. Bailey Roybal from Waverly will make his presence felt at this weight class as well.

120:

Returning Placewinners:
2nd – Ben Monroe – Ankeny Centennial
6th – Thomas Edwards – Johnston
7th – Dylan Albrecht – Waverly-Shell Rock
8th – Conrad Braswell – Praire, Cedar Rapids

Returning Qualifiers:
Jackson Barth – Cedar Falls (Round of 12)
Delzell Duncan – Burlington (Round of 12)
Logan Adamson – Bettendorf
Jeremy Ayala – Fort Dodge
Dayne Cordray – Fort Madison
Sean Heeney – Sioux City East

Ben Monroe has been in the state finals each of his first two seasons in a Jaguars singlet, will this be the year he gets his hand raised to end the season?  Of the 11 returning qualifiers from last year, six of them entered state with double digit losses.  Jeremy Ayala received the toughest draw in this bracket last year, having Zach Thompson (4th place) first round and Albrecht (7th place) in the consolation round. Oldham, Schriever and Nick Miller make this weight class much deeper this year. Hard to bet against Schriever at 120lbs.

126:

Returning Placewinners:
3rd – Joe Pins – Dubuque Hempstead
4th – Caleb McCabe – North Scott
5th – Cody Anderson – Waukee
6th – Brock Espalin – Des Moines East
7th – Colby Schriever – Mason City

Returning Qualifiers:
Evan Yant – Waverly-Shell Rock (Round of 12)
Jared Cordes – Epworth, Western Dubuque (Round of 12)
James Edwards – Johnston (Round of 12)
Tanner Higgins – Lewis Central (Round of 12)
Cam Baarda – Southeast Polk
Michael Moore – Des Moines North-Hoover
Keaton Speicher – Iowa City West

Four-timer Brody Teske is gone and with Perry dropping back to 2A, Joe Pins is the highest returning placewinner at 126 but will be at 132. Pins stopped No. 2 Espalin in the quarters last year 8-3, then capped off his Junior year pinning McCabe for third place. Caleb Ratchjen, Dylan Albrecht and Conrad Braswell will be early favorites at this weight class. Johnston’s Thomas Edwards has the experience to be on the medal stand up once again. Sounds like Colby Schriever will be making his way up two weights classes to 138 so a lot of new faces to 126 pounds this season.

132:

Returning Placewinners:
2nd – Eli Loyd – Pleasant Valley
4th – Caleb Corbin – Valley, West Des Moines
5th – Matthew Jordan – Des Moines East
6th – Graham Gambrall – Iowa City West
8th – Ryan Strickland – Southeast Polk

Returning Qualifiers:
Dylan Pauley – Dubuque Hempstead (Round of 12)
Ethan Sorenson – Sioux City North (Round of 12)
Dylan Falck – Cedar Rapids Kennedy
Rylan Hughbanks – Bettendorf

Loyd had a solid sophomore season finishing runner-up to senior Drew Bennett, Loyd’s only in-class losses last year came against graduating seniors. Valley’s Caleb Corbin finished a tremendous freshmen season with a fourth place finish, defeating fellow freshmen Gambrall twice at The Well.  Gambrall had no lack of matches on the year racking up a 47-19 record on his way to a 6th place state finish.  Jordan now a three-time place-winner will look to finish his season on top of the podium for the Scarlets. We have been told Monroe could be all the way up to 132 pounds for Ankeny Centennial and given his consistency at the Well him and Joe Pins will be early favorites. East’s Matthew Jordan continues to impress and has the ability to knock anyone off at 132.

138:

Returning Placewinners:
2nd – Deville Dentis – Des Moines East
4th – Carter Schmidt – Norwalk
5th – Nathan Marchand – Southeast Polk
6th – Drevon Ross – Fort Dodge
7th – Will Jefferson – Bettendorf

Returning Qaulifiers:
Isaac Larkin – Clinton (Round of 12)
Christian Simpson – Cedar Falls

Dentis is the top place-winner at this weight after recording 25 falls in his junior season and just coming up short in the title match last year. Dentis however could but clear up at 152 which makes room for Schmidt of Norwalk. He defeated both Ross and Jefferson on his way to a fourth place finish and a 34-10 junior season. Ross, Jefferson and Marchand will look to end their careers with a return trip to the podium but Eli Loyd may have something to say if he goes up.

145:

Returning Placerwinners:
1st – Cade Devos – Southeast Polk

Returning Qualfiers:
Collin Lewis – North Scott (Round of 12)
Elijah Demmer – Epworth, Western Dubuque (Round of 12)
Noah Cunningham – Cedar Rapids Kennedy
Nate Wallace – Mount Pleasant

Devos will be the top wrestler at his weight at 145 or 152, the No. 9 wrestler in the country and future SDSU Jackrabbit got over the hump last year with a decisive 7-2 victory in the championship match. Lewis and Demmer will look to improve on round of 12 finishes after drawing the No. 5 and No. 2 kids in the state last year in the first round. This weight class will have a lot of new faces on the podium and the top spot could be owned by Caleb Corbin of Valley coming all the way up from 132 a season ago.

152:

Returning Placewinners:
3rd – Lance Runyon – Southeast Polk
5th – Jacob Herrmann – Waverly-Shell Rock
7th – Ryker Kurimski – Epworth, Western Dubuque
8th – Cade Moss – Johnston

Returning Qualifiers:
Kyle Hefley – Iowa City, City High
Luke Fistler – Dallas Center-Grimes

Runyon comes into his senior season with a No. 12 nation ranking at 152 pounds according to The Open Mat.  The Ram senior will look to make his first finals appearance in his final high school season. Moss a multi-sport athlete for the Dragons, who knocked off No. 4 Hefley in their first round consolation match last year returns for a talented Johnston team looking to bring home another team trophy. Herrmann made the semis last year before dropping two in a row and placing fifth for the Go-Hawks. With Runyon likely bumping up, SEP should still have the top guy at this weight class in DeVos. Dentis, Hermann and Shawn Brown (DM Lincolon) will be right behind him looking for the upset.

160:

Returning Placewinners:
4th – Logan Neils – Ankeny Centennial
5th – Levi Egli – Fort Dodge
7th – Bryson Hervol – Waverly-Shell Rock
8th – Blake Underwood – Valley, West Des Moines

Returning Qualifiers:
Parker Klocke – Carroll (Round of 12)
Brett Mower – Glenwood (Round of 12)
Jake Matthaidess – North Scott
Nathan Siegworth – Dubuque Senior
Kole Wiegert – Storm Lake

Underclassmen is the name of the game at this weight, three of the four returning place-winners will be Juniors this year. Neils had a 2-0 record against Egli last including a 6-4 win in the consolation semis.  Matthaidess had a steller sophomore season leading up to state before dropping his only two matches at The Well. All of the returners at this class could be bumping up leaving Runyon the big favorite. Hervel from Waverly and Ryder Kurimski of Western Dubuque could lead things for the Eastern side of the state at this weight class.

170:

Returning Placewinners:
2nd – Anthony Zach – Waukee
5th – Jacob Wempen – Linn-Mar
7th – Levon Bellemy – Davenport Central

Returning Qualifiers:
Nic Leo – Ankeny Centennial (Round of 12)
Jake Hosch – Epworth, Western Dubuque (Round of 12)
Kent Kragenbrink – Dubuque Hempstead (Round of 12)
Brandon Lalla – Iowa City, City High
Kaden Smith – Fort Dodge
Arthur Sumie – Des Moines North-Hoover

Anthony Zach will be the early favorite at this weight class. Right now we see Neils bumping up to 170 to contend for a title. Senior, Kaden Smith from Fort Dodge is a returning qualifier but could make some noise for the Dodgers. Kragenbrink is another state qualifier looking to get on the award stand as a senior. If Levi Egli is at 170 he will also be in contention for a state title her but we see him up at 182lbs this season. Others to keep your eye on at this weight class will be Will Hoeft from Iowa City West and Brett Mower from Glenwood.

182:

Returning Placewinners:
4th – Zach Needham – Dallas Center-Grimes
7th – Devin Ludwig – Epworth, Western Dubuque

Returning Qualifiers:
Will Hoeft – Iowa City West (Round of 12)
Ryan Plummer – Linn-Mar (Round of 12)
Austin Lee – Fort Dodge
Trever Maiers – Dubuque Hempstead
Aaron Ungs – Storm Lake

This weight class cleared out so it will be interesting to see who flocks to this weight. Jacob Wempen a fifth place finisher at 170 will likely bump up and be the early favorite. Zach Needham the highest returning state place-winner from DC-G will be top three preseason. Nic Leo was a round of 12 finisher at 170 and would fit in nicely at this weight class. Could be top five guy.

195:

Returning Placewinners:
4th – Gabe Christenson – Southeast Polk
5th – Brayden Wolf – Waverly-Shell Rock
6th – Ashton Stoner-DeGroot – Prairie, Cedar Rapids
7th – Ethan Barry – Clinton
8th – Triston Licht – Fort Dodge

Returning Qualifiers:
Jaise Gulling – Newton (Round of 12)
Nate Heckart – Norwalk (Round of 12)
Dalton Sell – Muscatine

The leader of the pack here is Southeast Polk’s Gabe Christenson. Gabe had a stellar summer knocking off nationally ranked wrestlers. Sounds like Brayden Wolf will be bumping up to 220 so other contenders at 195 will be Ethan Barry of Clinton, Ashton Stoner-DeGroot will likely stay at 195 too. Lots of returning state place-winners but they will all be looking up at Gabe Christenson.

220:

Returning Placewinners:
2nd – Greg Hagan – Dowling Catholic
6th – Beau Lombardi – Valley, West Des Moines
7th – Tanner Teem – Urbandale
8th – Travis Theisen – LeMars

Returning Qualifiers:
Cameron Jones – Cedar Rapids Kennedy (Round of 12)
Gage Linahon – Newton (Round of 12)
Owen Dunne – Dubuque Hempstead
Shane Mathias – Muscatine
Danen Settles – Fort Madison

As state in 195 preview, Wolf will bump up to be the favorite here. Beau Lombardi has continued to improve during his high school career but will need to find more action from his feet to take out Wolf at the Well. Two seniors to keep your eye on will be Urbandale’s Tanner Teem and Linn-Mar’s Tanner Schultz.

285:

Returning Placewinners:
5th – Griffin Liddle – Bettendorf
7th – Josh Vis – Cedar Rapids Kennedy
8th – Troy Monahan – Mason City

Returning Qualifiers:
Carter Lawrence – Valley, West Des Moines (Round of 12)
Jacob Murry – Iowa City, City High (Round of 12)
Justin Campbell – Cedar Falls (Round of 12)
Logan Finowski – Fort Dodge

Greg Hagen had a break out year last season for Dowling. The state runner-up will be at 285 this year and it will be hima nd Griffin Liddle looking for the preseason top spot. Carter Lawrence has been making improvements and though he’s not a place-winner this could be his season to make the stand.
