Five Senior-level athletes with Iowa ties wrestled at the U.S. Open in Las Vegas this week. A top 5 finish in the women’s division qualifies the wrestlers for the World Team Trials.
Headlining the women were two runner up finishes by Laurie Louive (59 kg) and Rachel Watters (72 kg). Louive (NYAC/HWC) won by fall and decision heading to the finals where she lost to 2012 Olympian, Kelsey Campbell 2-4. Watters (NYAC/AWC) earned two tech falls leading up to the finals where she lost to 2015 World Team Member, Erin Clodgo 5-6.
Wrestling to fifth place finishes were Megan Black (57 kg) and Jasmine Bailey (68 kg). Black (TMWC) went 2-2 while Bailey (MBWC) went 3-2 on their way to qualifying for the trials.
Anna Poyner (62 kg) of Missouri Valley went 0-2 for the tournament.
The World Team Trials Challenge Tournament, taking place May 18-20 in Rochester, MN, will showcase Senior men’s and women’s freestyle divisions. What an opportunity for Iowans to take a short drive and witness some of the top wrestling talent in the nation!
