Per his personal Twitter account, Pat Downey will be competing at the 55th annual Ken Kraft Midlands at 197 pounds. A 2016 All-American for the Iowa State Cyclones, Downey announced his intent to transfer to the University of Iowa back in August.
The tweet has since been deleted, but Downey announced his plans to wrestle 197 in response to a Flowrestling article that listed him competing at 184 pounds.
One of the hurdles Downey needed to clear prior to enrolling at Iowa was the completion of his bachelor’s degree at Iowa State. Upon completion of that requirement, Downey then needed to be admitted into Iowa’s graduate program to become eligible as a second semester athlete. That’s the main reason we haven’t seen Downey on the mat through the first two months of the season.
Downey was able to enroll and compete in college opens this fall, but he was not able to compete attached to Iowa until he enrolled in the university. Shortly after his tweet that he would be at 197 pounds for Midlands, Downey clarified that he will be at 184 pounds come the regular season (this tweet also has been deleted).
Official rosters for the Midlands have yet to be announced and Iowa’s roster on Hawkeye Sports still doesn’t list Downey as an official team member. Whether or not Downey actually wrestles up at 197 or at 184 pounds where he himself says he will end the season, the chief takeaway should be Downey believes he will be competing at the Midlands.
