Waverly-Shell Rock hosted their New Year Brawl dual tournament, but despite a 4-0 start to the day they were unable to close things out on their home mat, dropping a 38-26 dual to #6 ranked Dubuque Hempstead in the final dual of the day to take second.
Hempstead was able to smash their way through the first four duals on the day defeating Cedar Rapids Xavier 64-18, Bettendorf 54-23, Marshalltown 54-24, and Ballard 59-16. That set up a final between two of the top ten teams in 3A, with Waverly currently carrying the #9 rankings in the IA Wrestle dual rankings.
The Go-Hawks gave Dubuque their closet competition on the day, but it is hard to beat a team that features nearly half of a lineup that went undefeated on the day. #4 Dillon Gottschalk (106), #9 Nathan Feldman (132), #6 Alex Ward (160), Adam Rang (182), #9 Alex Freiburger (220), and #1 Gannon Gremmel (285) were a perfect 5-0 on the day for Dubuque, while Joe Pins (120) was 4-0.
