The UNI Panthers hosted their annual open tournament yesterday, just one week after coming back from the Cliff Keen Invite in Las Vegas. The Panthers had a fairly successful Saturday, crowning two champions and putting seven wrestlers in the finals.
Leading the way for UNI was 149 pounder Max Thomsen, who finished the day with two pinfalls, two major decisions and one tech fall, which came in the first place match. Thomsen defeated Iowa State’s Blayne Briceno in the final round 20-3.
UNI’s other champion was 197 pounder Cody Krumweide, who defeated Minnesota’s Robert Steveson in sudden victory, 5-3. This was a good test as Krumweide had to come back from being down 3-1 going into the third period. The Panther earned an escape point and forced a stall call on Steveson to send it to sudden victory.
“He made the guy earn things,” UNI Head Coach Doug Schwab said in a press release after the tournament. “It’s nothing flashy, but it’s fighting. He made it hard for that guy every time. We talk about building our reputation of what kind of competitor are we going to be. Are we going to be the kind of competitor who rolls over and gives in or be the kind of competitor who fights tooth and nail for everything? When a guy knows he has to step on the mat and wrestle that, they never look forward to it. Proud of how he competed.”
Leighton Gaul (125), Josh Alber (133), Isaiah Patton (165), Jacob Holschlag (174) and JJ Everard (285) all took home second place. In Patton’s case he took home a win (by forfeit) over UNI’s usual 165 pound starter Cooper Moore. Honestly I was a little surprised to see Moore in the tournament, but after a disappointing finish in Vegas he took to the mat on his home campus and came away with two pinfall victories.
Gaul was one of three Panthers to place at 125 pounds, with Jay Schwarm and Tanner Rohweder finishing third and fourth, respectively. 174 also saw three Panthers place; after Holschlag, Drew Foster took 3rd and Taylor Lujan took 6th.
