Prairie Hawks win Independence Invite

With the first weekend of December here that meant it was time for the annual Independence Invite, and for the #6 ranked Cedar Rapids Prairie program that meant one thing; time to dominate.

The field included several top ten teams across Iowa’s three wrestling classes – with #1 in 1A Alburnett the highest ranked team – but in the end the top heavy Prairie team was able to garner a lot of hardware, taking the team title with 223.5 points, outpacing second place Crestwood (159), third place and host Independence (145.5), and Alburnett (139.5) and Christian Brothers College high school, MO (130) rounding out the top five in the team race.

Prairie built their team tittle by placing a number of wrestlers in the finals (5) and crowed three champions on the day. Taking top honors for the Hawks were #3 Marcus England (113), #1 Sam Uthoff (132), and #5 Taylor Mehmen (195), finishing second were Conrad Braswell (106) and #5 Tyler Pasker (220).

Second place finisher Crestwood had a great tournament, though with a few surprises mixed in. Second ranked Michael Millage (120), a returning state champion for Crestwood fell in the finals 7-4 to Malik Johnson of Christian Brothers College. Also taking second for the #6 ranked 2A team were #2 Ryan Steffen (126), #3 Chase Lienhard (132), and Jacob Knutson (285).

Host school Independence placed three wrestlers into the finals of their tournament with 170 #5 ranked wrestler Nick Holt bringing home a title and #10 Drew Davis(138) and #4 Matt McMillan (195) taking second.

1A’s #1 ranked Alburnett had it’s fair share of success as well, as it was #3 ranked Drake Halblom that took out Crestwood’s Steffen 9-7 in the finals to claim Alburnett’s first title. #1 Conner Shulista (152) also claimed a title for the Pirates, while #1 Bryce Paul (160) fell to future Hawkeye and Osage standout #1 ranked Tristan Johnson.
