The IA Wrestle tournament of the week concluded yesterday in Cedar Falls and while West Des Moines Valley was most likely considered the favorite coming into the tournament (they were the highest ranked team of any class in the field), they absolutely blew away the competition scoring 224 points, with the next closest team being Cedar Rapids Jefferson with 159.5 points.
Valley built their dominating performance off the backs of four champions and an additional four wrestlers reached the finals capping off their strong tournament. Winning titles for Valley were Nick Oldham (106), #5 Spencer Hutchinson (113), #2 Jack Koethe (160), and #6 (@195) Rocky Lombardi (220).
Team runner-up Jefferson was led by individual champions Brenden Baker (120) and Kyle Briggs (152), as well as second place finisher Nick Dreckman (182).
One of the more notable finals matches occurred at 126 pounds where #4 (2A @120) Derek Holschlag of Union went to the ultimate tiebreaks to defeat Valley sophomore #1 (3A) Grant Stotts 2-1. Both wrestlers were also recently named top ten wrestlers in their grade setting up one of the more high powered finals matches of the evening.
