An update from Brazil where Iowa redshirt freshman Sam Stoll wrestled for bronze tonight at the United World Wrestling Junior World Championships.
Despite a strong start from Stoll at the World tournament he was handed his second loss in as many matches when Turkey’s Yildrim Osman defeated him 5-1 in the bronze medal match.
Stoll, who competes in the 120 kg weight class will be wrestling for his second career bronze medal at the Junior World tournament, as he won his first back in 2013 on the Greco team. Stoll is the only wrestler from America with an opportunity to bring home a medal for Greco-Roman.
Things started off pretty good for Stoll as he stuck Egypt’s Sayed Abdelatif in 1:24 to open the tourney. He followed that win with a 4-1 win over Germany’s Jello Kramer, but then lost in the semifinals to Georgia wrestler Zviadi Pataridze 8-0. Tonight Stoll will face Turkey opponent Osman Yildirim. Finals are supposed to get under way at 6:00 PM and are streamed on United World Wrestling’s website.
Hayden Tuma (66 kg) was the only other U.S. wrestler to record a win in this morning’s session as he won 13-4 over host country’s Soilson Junior. He lost in the next round to Antonio Sakhno of Belarus.
Josiah Seaton (55 kg) and Nick Corba (84 kg) lost their first round matches by technical fall to be eliminated from the competition.
