Iowa entered Day two of the Cadet Greco-Roman tournament with nine wrestlers all competing for a spot on the podium and forever being known as a Fargo All-American. Only four wrestlers would make it through the infamous blood round (the last match a wrestler needs to win to make the podium). Two Iowans will go for third, one for fifth and seventh each.

Iowa got it’s first All-American when our #1 ranked FRECO wrestler Aden Reeves (106) took the mat and put together a 10-0 first period technical fall to secure a top eight finish. Alex Thomsen (120) joined him just a few short minutes later as he added his own 10-0 technical fall to secure his top eight finish. Thomsen’s par terre accounted for a majority of his points in the win.

Reeves looked even stronger on his second match of the day when he took out his opponent 13-0. Reeves hit a pair of four point throws and then a five point throw to make quick work and improve his finish to no worse than sixth. Thomsen joined Reeves in the consolation semifinals with a technical fall of his own, his a 12-2 win. Reeves then dropped his consolation match by technical fall and will wrestle for fifth. Thomsen picked up his fifth technical fall of the tournament to reach the consolation finals and wrestle for third.

Returning Greco All-American Anthony Sherry’s (160) match was filled with excitement as Sherry trailed on criteria 3-3 with under ten seconds to go when he hit a four point throw and then earned the fall to earn his second Cadet Greco All-American status. Sherry followed that with another pin this time in 36 seconds to reach the consolation semifinals and lock up a top six finish. In the consolation semifinals, Sherry overcame a 2-0 deficit to win 9-5 in his match and will wrestle for third.

Garrett Kubovec (195) continued his pinning spree as his fourth straight fall secured his finish on the stand. Kubovec couldn’t sustain his pinning streak however, and he was defeated 11-11 to put himself in the seventh place match. Kubovec had been leading 7-1 at one point in the match.

Iowa lost it’s first wrestler, Drew Bennett (100) in the round of 12. With the match tied 5-5 in the second period Bennett gave up a takedown, and was then rolled for eight more points to end his tournament. After starting out to a 6-0 start off a takedown and a pair of turns, Keaton Geerts (126) was defeated in his match to finish just shy of the podium.

Nelson Brands (132) also started off strong to a 6-0 start, but was unable to stave off a comeback against his Illinois opponent. Brands did hit another throw to lead 10-5 with just over a minute to go, but he himself was then tossed for a four point move and then rolled again, which made for the 11-10 final.

Danny Salas proved to be a big thorn in Iowa’s side as he handed Bryce Esmoil (195) a loss which eliminated him from the tournament. Salas was the same wrestler that defeated Kubovec on the first day of the tournament. Spencer Trenary (285) was also eliminated when his opponent won 13-4.
