This past weekend in Oklahoma the Junior National Duals took place and Team Iowa was able to come through with a top five finish. The Iowa squad was particularly talented this year, but only two wrestlers from Iowa were named to the freestyle All-Tournament team.
The first wrestler was Carter Isley, who competed at heavyweight for the Iowa team that finished fifth in the tournament. Isley was 7-0 on the weekend with four of those wins coming by way of bonus. Isley secured falls in Pool action over Jake Minshew of California Blue and then again defeated Christian Boyles of Missouri in the pool semifinals. In the Gold/Silver pool Isley picked up a 10-0 technical fall against Hunter Chapman to help Iowa advance to the fifth place match. There he stuck his opponent from Michigan in 1:26.
The other undefeated wrestler was also a heavyweight, but Alex Silberstein wrestled on the other Iowa team. Silberstein was an impressive 8-0 on the weekend, and of the six matches he wrestled in (two wins came by way of forfeit) five of his wins were by bonus. Silberstein started his day off with a 10-8 win over Jarrod Snyder of California Red, and that would be the only match he would not win by bonus on the weekend. He won his next two matches by technical fall, not allowing a single point in the process. Then in the Red/Blue pool he picked up a fall and two technical falls to remain perfect on the weekend and in total only surrendered 10 points on the entire weekend, with eight coming in his very first match.
Silberstein is head to Iowa State University in the fall to wrestle under head coach Kevin Jackson, and as discussed in our interview last week, Isley’s future remains up in the air.
