Team Iowa Dominant in First Day of Disney Duals

Team Iowa’s very talented squad certainly hasn’t disappointed to this point at this year’s Disney Duals as Team Iowa Black has opened to a fast 4-0 start in pool competition. It remains to be seen if Iowa will be able to hold their break neck pace the deeper they get into the tournament, but they definitely have a great start. In Iowa’s four matches so far they have outscored their competition 251-25.

Iowa stated off their day in terrific fashion by beating Pennsylvania’s Contender Elite team 63-8, losing just a pair of matches. Future UNI Panther Jacob Schwarm had a great first round picking up a fall in the final minute of his match as part of a four match Iowa winning streak to start the dual. Iowa also got falls from Josh Wenger, Josh Davis, Dayton Racer, Jacob Holschlag, and then three straight falls to close things out from Steven Holloway, Gabriel Rangel, Gannon Gremmell.

The next match was a little tougher for the Iowa team as they defeated the Ozark Team STL Slayers 33-17. After losing the first match of the dual, Bettendorf Bulldogs Jack Wagner and Schwarm won back-to-back matches to give Iowa the lead. After surrendering the lead back, Iowa got a win from Wenger and a major decision from Max Thomsen to get the score back to Iowa’s favor. Racer earned his second fall of the day as Iowa routed took control in the upper weights for the win.

From there it would be all Iowa to close out the day. First they took out Bull City 81-0 and followed that with a 74-0 drubbing of the Michigan Red Peppers to end the day undefeated. Every single Iowa wrestler earned bonus points in their win over Bull City, and in total Iowa ended the day with 15 falls in their final two contests. Racer earned the most points for Iowa on the day, by earning two falls and two technical falls for a total of 22 team points.

Team Iowa has three more duals in their pool to determine their placement and their chances of advancing to the finals. Up first Iowa will have the Ohio Room, followed by the Virginia Phenomenon, and then ending pool action against the Illinois Outsiders.
