Southeast Polk leads 3A race after first session

A day after the Southeast Polk Rams caputred the state dual title, they have jumped out to a double-digit lead after the first round of the traditional tournament this morning. Southeast Polk wrestlers went 10-3 in the first round with #2 Nathan Lendt (113) going down to #3 Brenden Baker and Brady Buchheit (160) going down to #8 Luke Sedlacek both of Cedar Rapids Jefferson, and Kameron Padavich (182) losing to #9 David Carr of Pleasant Valley. Lendt, Buchheit, and Padavich each responded with wins to give Southeast Polk 13 wrestlers still alive in the tournament.

The two top ranked Southeast Polk wrestlers Nolan Helickson (126) and Jake Marnin (285) both earned falls to keep their perfect seasons in tact.

#2 ranked Bettendorf trails the Rams, going 7-4 in the opening round with six of the Bulldog wins coming by bonus. The lone wrestler to not win by bonus was when #2 Paul Glynn won a hard-fought match against #3 Clint Lembeck of Cedar Rapids Xavier. Bettendorf lost wrestlers Mason Morris (106), Drew Sass (138), and Kelsey Kintz (170) on the backside, but Chris Patricio (182) won by fall to keep eight Bulldog’s alive in the tournament.

Cedar Rapids Prairie is in the top five at #3 with five wrestlers making the quarterfinals – #5 Marcus England (106), #4 Sam Uthoff (126), #3 Josh Wenger (138), #5 Jarod Cadena (182), and #8 Taylor Mehmen (195). The Hawks also have three wrestlers still alive on the consolation side with Trenten Wennermark (113), Seth Wennermark (132) and Tyler Pasker (285) picking up consolation wins.

The #3 Fort Dodge team is sitting in 4th by just a half a point with 22 points, after going 5-2 in the opening round. Keenan Cook (126) and #9 Cayd Lara (132) responded with consolation wins to keep all seven Fort Dodge wrestlers alive.

North Scott’s four ranked wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals with #2 Colin Kreiter winning by major, and #2 Cordell Eaton and #10 Wyatt Wriedt won by fall to propel North Scott to #5 in the current standings with 17 points.
