The 2015 Southern Scuffle presented by Defense Soap and Flips Wrestling will kick off this Thursday, January 1st. This will be the 5th year Chattanooga has hosted the Southern Scuffle with Penn State taking home the team title all four years. The previous 8 Scuffles took place in Greensboro, North Carolina with Cornell and Minnesota winning three team titles each followed by Missouri winning two. Penn State will look to defend the team title, but it will be no easy task. This year they will have to do it without a pair of multiple time NCAA Champs in Ed Ruth and David Taylor who both graduated last year. Penn State will also be without a pair of All Americans Nico Megaludis and Zain Retherford who are taking a redshirt this year. The tournament will also be without Minnesota as they head to Hawaii for warmer weather and The Aloha Open. Other teams to keep an eye on are Missouri, Oklahoma State, and Iowa State. Oky State returns 3 2014 All Americans highlighted by NCAA Champ at 157 Alex Dieringer. Iowa State brings 2 All Americans in Earl Hall 125 8th and Kyven Gadsen 197 4th, but the Cyclones will be without 3 starters Mike Moreno 165, Lelund Weatherspoon 184, Quean Smith 285. The Missouri Tigers will bring 2 2014 All Americans J’Den Cox 197 1st and Drake Houdasheldt 5th at 149 as well as 2013 AA Alan Waters who placed 4th at 125 then took a redshirt for the 2014 season. Missouri’s lineup features 2 Iowa High School Wrestlers Mikey England at 165 from Centerville High School and Willie Miklus at 184 of Southeast Polk High School.
