The Hawkeyes sent 11 wrestlers to the Joe Parisi Open this past weekend, and of that group eight of those wrestlers placed in the top six, with two Hawkeyes winning titles.
Highlighting the Freshman/Sophomore division was Mitch Bowman, who finished second in the 184 weight class. Bowman’s biggest win was over instate rival Adam Drain of UNI, with a 3-1 OT victory.
In the Open division, the Hawkeyes had varying levels of success. In the 141 weight class, Iowa had a pair of finishes in Logan Ryan and Seth Gross. Ryan placed 6th, with two of his losses coming to Oklahoma State wrestlers, and the final defeat coming at the hands of Tyler Willers of UNI. Gross tore through his side of the bracket, starting off with a pair of falls and then a dominating 20-5 technical fall performance over Willers. In the finals he lost to Dean Heil of Oklahoma State. This was the first true open tournament for Gross and with those results it’s easy to see that the high school national champion has a bright future for Iowa.
Everyone was looking forward to the 149 battle that was supposed to take place this weekend, and we got to see two Iowa matchups and maybe a decision is starting to emerge for Brands. With Topher Carton getting the nod at the Iowa City duals, Brody Grothus, Brandon Sorensen, and Edwin Cooper were sent to hash things out down in Missouri. Grothus won the the Luther open battle between the trio, so he earned the #1 overall seed. A win here would go a long way in validating his status as the starter. Things don’t always work out the way they are supposed to, as he lost to Terrel Wilbourn in his semifinal match robbing him at a chance to defend his title against Sorensen.
Sorensen led the way, winning the weight class, picking up a victory over Cooper 3-1 to reach the finals. On the backside Grothus earned his second victory of the season over Cooper, by pinning him in the first. Considering Brands stressed that he needs to see consistency from all of his wrestlers at this year’s preseason press conference, you have to wonder if Sorensen will get the nod on Saturday against Iowa State.
One of the biggest surprises of the day was Alex Meyer bringing home the 174 title. Meyer is the perfect backup, because if called upon, Meyer could step into the lineup and be one of the top wrestlers in division one wrestling. Meyer cemented that thought when he took out Oklahoma State backup Crutchmer, and then defeated starter Jordan Rodgers 11-10 to bring home the title.
Sam Stoll was the final Hawkeye to place on the day, finishing 3rd in the heaviest class. Stoll’s only loss on the day was to Mellon of Missouri (6-1). Perviously Mellon defeated Stoll 8-3 at the Harold Nichols open earlier this month.
