University of Iowa Press Release:
IOWA CITY, Iowa — University of Iowa head wrestling coach Tom Brands announced Tuesday that Austin DeSanto will serve a one-match suspension when the Hawkeyes host Maryland on Feb. 8.
DeSanto was penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct following Iowa’s dual win at Nebraska on Feb. 3.
“Austin knows his behavior on and off the mat is a reflection of this university and program, and I am very pleased with his response to this matter. I know he is eager to move forward,” Brands said.
“I want to apologize to my opponents and teammates for my actions on the mat. I know they are disrespectful and there is no excuse,” DeSanto said. “I accept the consequences of my behavior and the decision of Coach Brands, and have assured my teammates and coaches that I will better represent our team when I return.”
DeSanto is 14-1 and ranked third in the country at 133 pounds. He will return to the lineup when Iowa hosts Indiana on Feb. 15.
With respect; It’s not easy to cast that stone, especially for an Iowa fan. I’m pulling for him but, you watch him behave in the same demeaning, disrespectful manner over and over and be warned over and over and he just continues to do it; to the detriment of the team and yes,the sport. Who else behaves that way? Brands admonished him for his behavior in last years NCAA’s while at Drexel, this before ever stepping on the mats for Iowa. The match against Stevan Micic from Michigan was a disgrace and he still pushes the envelope. He does need to grow up so right now he needs some real tough love from the coaches and team to help him to grow up. The last thing he needs is people making excuses for him..That hasn’t worked at all thus far.
Hope he finds a way to dominate without letting his emotions get him into trouble again. Great wrestler, just needs to get his win, shake hands and run into back room to let out his over emotional baggage. He is a great addition to the team, one which we needed, but we can’t lose a team point after every win, it is counterproductive. To anyone who claims he is a stain on the sport, it is fairly easy to cast that stone, but anyone that understands the sport, should also consider how much the sport is tied into mentality. He wants to dominate, that is good. He over reacts a lot. That is bad, He is not bad, just immature when reacting. He takes people wanting to beat him way too personally. Hope he grows out of that. Let the win make your statement, Austin. That message screams exactly what you are trying to portray. Keep up the good work, Hawkeye!

It’s long overdue. This goes back to last year in the NCAA’s. He is not just a poor representative of Iowa but a poor representative of the entire sport .
This coming from an Iowa fan. His punishment should be worse because it does reflect bad on the entire program. His teammates should let him have it too.
No class, no respect and no self control.
I don’t think Nebraska should be proud of their antics during the match!
What fact? Maryland is the next upcoming dual. I think you’ve confused fact with opinion.
But he wouldn’t be suspended if they were not wrestling an 0-8 Maryland.
facts!
