When: Friday, January 25th / Sunday, January 27th, 2019
Stats: Northern Colorado, Oklahoma
UNI welcomes two Big 12 squads to the West Gym this weekend in Northern Colorado and Oklahoma. The duals are the second and third for UNI in a span of seven days before hitting the road for Stillwater and a dual with Oklahoma State.
Put pretty simply, these are both duals that UNI should win. The 14th-ranked Panthers will put five ranked wrestlers out on the mat to counter just two for UNC and one for OU. The most intriguing match of the weekend will come at 141 pounds, where UNI’s newly number three-ranked man, Josh Alber, will take on #15 Dom Demas. Alber is on an 11 match winning streak which includes a win over then-number-three Jaydin Eierman at Missouri.
Other than that I think the big thing to look for over the two duals are UNI’s unranked wrestlers. 197 pounder Tyrell Gordon got a nice win Air Force’s Casey Jumps, 8-2, in their match last Sunday, which snapped a five match losing streak for the true freshman.
At this point Gordon, Jay Schwarm, Jack Skudlarczyk, Pat Schoenfelder, and Carter Isley (more on him next) just need to get wins under their belt. Schwarm was the only one of the bunch to be ranked in the initial NCAA Coaches Panel, and while that’s good he’s only 7-7 on the season. He’ll get his chance at UNC’s #19 Rico Montoya tonight, and if he can get the win he might see himself bump back up into some top-20 rankings.
Dropping matches to unranked wrestlers is (obviously) not what any of them need at this point in the season. It’ll be a stretch to see if they can secure an allocation spot for their weight, but if they have any chance most of them will need to go 2-0 this weekend.
I also expect to see Isley back in the lineup this weekend. The big man has been rehabbing an injured knee since the UNI Open but looks to be back on track for the weekend.
We’ll be in the West Gym for both duals this weekend and will have full recaps following each.
