The Panthers dual season is about to heat up, starting with a little trip to the west. This Friday night UNI will take on South Dakota State in a Big 12 conference dual. The Jackrabbits are 1-3 (0-1 Big 12) and with defending National Champion Seth Gross (probably) out of the lineup, there’s not a lot going in favor of SDSU.
Rookie Head Coach Damion Hahn has dealt with departures of seniors Luke Zilverberg and David Kocer, both All-American’s at the 2018 NCAA tournament, in addition to Gross’ injury-plagued season.
Put bluntly, SDSU is not a good team this year. Other than Gross they have one ranked wrestler, Johnston, Iowa native Henry Pohlmeyer. The sophomore is ranked 19th by The Open Mat and placed eighth at the Midlands. The Jackrabbits other placer at the tournament, Tanner Sloan, is also from Iowa. The 197 pounder earned second, taking down the second, sixth, seventh, and tenth-seeded wrestlers. He’s not scheduled to take the mat Friday though, as he’s redshirting this season.
Pohlmeyer and UNI’s Max Thomsen’s match will be the most anticipated of the dual. The two have yet to meet, and while Pohlmeyer is a good wrestler, there’s no doubt that Thomsen will be the heavy favorite going into it.
This figures to be a dual for UNI to get their younger guys some good experience. Jack Skudlarczyk, Pat Schoenfelder, Tyrell Gordon, and Izaak Shedenhelm all need to get wins under their belt to help improve their seeds at the Big 12 tournament and to just get a feel for what it’s like wrestling full-time for a Big 12 team. In addition Shedenhelm is wrestling at heavyweight and needs that experience feeling out how to take on guys who can be as much as 60-70 pounds heavier than he is.
There’s no doubt that this dual should go the Panthers’ way. If it doesn’t, something has gone horribly wrong for UNI. I would expect bonus points from Josh Alber, Bryce Steiert, Taylor Lujan and Drew Foster, with wins from Schwarm and Skudlarczyk. Schoenfelder, Gordon, and Shedenhelm’s matches I have as toss-ups. I’m not even sure what a worst-case scenario would look like, other than maybe a bus crash and eight of UNI’s starting lineup not making weight.
The dual on Saturday at Nebraska looks to be a lot more competitive and we’ll have a preview up for that one so come on back.
