The Iowa State wrestling team is sending a total of 12 wrestlers to this year’s UWW U23 World Team Trials, which takes place in Akron, Ohio. The event starts on Friday June 1st with Greco-Roman competition before switching to freestyle the final two days. With the winners of each weight making a World Team for the United States wrestlers that reach the finals of their respective brackets will compete in a best-of-three showdown. The Trials champion will then get the opportunity to wrestle at the World Championships in Bucharest, Romania in November.
Perhaps the biggest surprise heading into the weekend is that redshirt freshman Sammy Colbray is planning on competing at 86 kg (189 pounds), which is several pounds lighter than his regular season weight of 197 pounds. We’ll see if this lower competition weight is an early sign that Colbray is interested in testing the waters at 184 pounds for next season.
Several of the Cyclones 2018 postseason starters will be headed to Akron this weekend with Sinjin Briggs (61 kg), Jarrett Degen (70 kg), Chase Straw (74 kg), Skyler St. John (74 kg), and Danny Bush (86 kg) all scheduled to compete this weekend.
Straw is planning on competing at 74 kg (165 pounds) which is a weight class above where he competed this past season. With Ohio phenom David Carr entering the program this fall Straw’s future may be at 165.
Also moving weights is Danny Bush who competed at 174 pounds this past season for Iowa State. With Marcus Coleman coming off of redshirt, many speculated that Bush would return to 184, where he was a NJCAA All-American for Iowa Central.
This weekend will also provide Cyclone fans the first opportunity to see future 125-pound starter Alex Mackall in action, as he is planning on competing at 57 kg. The freshman transferred to Ames in the middle of this season from Rutgers University and saw limited action as an unattached wrestler in the second semester.
