From The Top 5 Matches We Want to See at Iowa Wrestle Offs

1. Vince Turk (So) vs Carter Happel (Fr) | 141 pounds

The top two seeds at 141 reached the finals as sophomore Vince Turk got past true freshman Max Murin and redshirt freshman Carter Happel downed Danny Murphy. The winner gets the coveted starting spot. This is probably one of two wrestle off matches that has been discussed by Hawkeye fans going back to last season and tomorrow the public will get to witness it live.

2. Brandon Sorensen (Sr) vs Pat Lugo (Jr) | 149 pounds

As expected, both Sorensen and Lugo advanced to tomorrow’s 149 pound finals with their Friday victories. As we noted in the original story linked above this type of matchup is something fans would normally get to see in the NCAA quarterfinals, but we get the luxury of seeing it as an in-room battle.

3. Joey Gunther (So) vs Kaleb Young (Fr) | 174 pounds

Guaranteed finals match at 174 pounds. We will get this one on tomorrow!

4. Cash Wilcke (So) vs Jacob Warner (T-Fr) | 197 pounds

Returning starter Cash Wilcke was able to take care of business in his semifinal match, defeating freshman Cade Brownlee, and wouldn’t you know it true freshman Jacob Warner was able to pull the upset over sophomore Steven Holloway to set up our dream 197 wrestle off matchup. Even though the win came against a teammate this is a pretty big win for Warner to notch. Holloway wrestled heavyweight for the Hawks last season, so he was by no means a small 197. There is a lot of buzz on whether or not “TBA” at 125 pounds is Spencer Lee, but this matchup is equally buzz worthy.

5. Phil Laux (Sr) vs Paul Glynn (So) | 133 pounds

Like, 174 pounds Iowa has announced that this matchup will go down tomorrow.
