Mejia, who became the state of California’s second ever four-time state champion, originally committed to the Hawkeyes just before his sophomore season. Then shortly after July heading into his senior season, Mejia decided to open his recruiting back up, which is when he eventually accepted an offer at the University of Illinois.
A lot has transpired since then for both Iowa, Illinois, and in between. Most notably was when Associated Head Coach Mark Perry accepted a coaching position within in the Hawkeye Wrestling Club. Even despite losing one of his future coaches, Mejia remained committed to Illinois, until this most recent development.
For now, Mejia is still considering all options available to him continuing his wrestling career, but Iowa will be among the teams in that consideration. Mejia also informed IAwrestle that he is Division I eligible.
