Prior to the start of the 2016-17 season Iowa head coach Tom Brands made a statement about his 125-pounder wrestler, “Stay Clear While Machine In Use”. Gilman ran with the phrase putting together an undefeated regular season, and took third at the NCAA championships in March.
After wrapping up his career with Iowa, Gilman joined the Hawkeye Wrestling Club, and has since gone on a tear, winning the last chance qualifier and the World Team Trials at 57 kg. Gilman will represent the United States at Freestyle World Championships in Paris this September.
