Liberty High School principal, Scott Kibby has announced it’s first ever wrestling coaches as Tom Van Dyke and Joe Williams were announced as co-head coaches for the program. The Iowa City District school will enter varsity competition next season.
Both coaches come in from Iowa City’s two other public school programs, with Van Dyke a now former assistant for West High School and Williams ran a youth wrestling academy over at City High.
In addition to working at West, Van Dyke comes in with a wealth of high school coaching experience serving as head coach at Red Oak and Griswold programs for eight years, giving him 13 years coaching experience at the high school level.
Williams was a star wrestler for legendary Hawkeye coach Dan Gable back in the 90s, earning All-American honors from 1994-1998, three of those NCAA titles. Upon graduation Williams competed on six World Teams (including the 2004 Olympic squad) earning the U.S. two bronze medals in 2001 and 2005.
