Austin Gomez of Glenbard North, Illinois has tweeted this evening that he will begin exploring other options outside the Iowa State wrestling program following the news that head coach Kevin Jackson will be stepping down as head coach of the wrestling team at the end of this season. Gomez stated that Jackson played a key role in his decision to commit to Iowa State. The initial press release from Iowa State included that Jackson would still be a part of the program in Ames, but that his role would be administrative instead of coaching.
Gomez is ranked #5 at 138 pounds by InterMat and was the top recruit in Iowa State’s 2017 class. Gomez signed his Letter of Intent to wrestle at Iowa State in November. It is unclear at this time whether Iowa State has granted Gomez his release, or if they will wait until the head coaching situation is solidified.
