University of Iowa freshman Michael Kemerer was able to capture a national title in Las Vegas this past weekend at the UWW Junior U.S. Open. Kemerer dominated his way through a 70 kg weight class winning his first four matches by fall or technical superiority. Kemerer was one of nine University of Iowa wrestlers who attended the tournament, and a total of 23 wrestlers with ties to the state of Iowa competed in Vegas.

Kemerer was one of two wrestlers with an Iowa tie to win a Junior national title at the tournament as he was joined by Hawkeye commit and former high school teammate Spencer Lee, who won the 50 kg bracket. Kemerer entered the tournament as the favorite to win his weight class, and he got his only real challenge in the finals against California senior Evan Wick, a Wisconsin commit. Kemerer built an early 8-0 first period lead against Wick, and that fast start paid off in the end as Wick came back to close the gap to a 9-8 in favor of Kemerer.
The Junior Open serves as the first step in deciding Team USA’s Junior team that they will send to France for the Junior World Championships later this summer. The winners of the Open receive and automatic bye to the best-of-three finals at next month’s Junior World Team Trials in Texas. Although it should be noted that Kemerer’s 70 kg weight, along with 63 kg and 79 kg are not contested at the World Championships, so wrestlers of those weight’s will need to move if they wish to make the Junior World Team.
Speaking of making the Junior World Team, Spencer Lee is one of those wrestler that earned a bye to next month’s finals winning by technical superiority throughout the whole tournament. Lee is the reigning World Champion at 50 kg, and gave his verbal commitment to the University of Iowa just over a week ago.
Finishing runner-up at the tournament was another Hawkeye verbal commitment, Gavin Teasdale of Pennsylvania. Teasdale entered as the No. 3 seed of the tournament, but showed that seeds mean nothing when he beat No. 2 seed Nick Piccininni of Oklahoma State by technical superiority in the semifinals. In the finals he faced off with Oklahoma high school prep Daton Fix, who was the tournament champion a year ago. It was a tight battle between the two, but Fix was able to come out on top 6-5 in the end. Teasdale will be a key favorite to return to the Junior Trials finals against Fix next month in Texas, but it also should be noted that he is still eligible to wrestle in the younger Cadet Trials, where he will try and make his third Cadet team later this summer.
Placing third this weekend was Iowa State commit Austin Gomez, who was also expected to be in the thick of things in the 55 kg bracket. Gomez did just that as he made it to the semifinals of the bracket, but was downed by Fix, 10-0. Gomez then earned a fall and then a 17-10 win over Piccininni to tak third.
Grand View sent several wrestlers to Vegas, but only Evan Hansen was able to come home with a top eight finish. Hansen made the semifinals at 96 kg before being downed 9-6 by Lance Benick. Hansen who his next match, but was defeated by Illinois wrestler Andre Lee in the consolation finals.
A pair of former Iowa preps brought home fifth place finishes at the tournament. Former Bettendorf standout Fredy Stroker took fifth at 66 kg after suffering a second round loss on Friday. Jeren Glosser took fifth at 70 kg, with his first loss coming to eventual runner-up Wick.
University of Iowa wrestlers Paul Gylnn and Vince Turk brought home sixth place honors at 63 and 66 kg respectively. Iowa State wrestler Colston DiBlasi took sixth at 79 kg. The final Iowan to place top eight this weekend was Joey Gunther, who took seventh at 74 kg.
