Loras College hosted their annual Pat Flanagan Open, and several Iowa schools sent wrestlers, including the University of Iowa and UNI. The big story coming into the day was Brody Grothus, the Hawkeyes’ 141 pounder, making his debut at that weight for the year. Expectations are sky high for Grothus, as Iowa will look for him to lock down the 141 pound spot as a starter going forward.
The conclusion to that story probably isn’t what Hawkeye fans were expecting. Grothus went 1-2 on the day, winning his first match of the day by pinfall, but dropping his next two, the first by pinfall and the second in the first tiebreaker. He dropped both matches to wrestlers from Wisconsin, Cole Martin and Eli Stickley. Grothus would forfeit his 5th place match to finish sixth.
The rest of the Iowa squad had a good showing, taking home three first place finishes: Jaden Glosser at 149, Logan Thompson at 157, and Burke Paddock at 165. At 197 pounds Steven Holloway took home second place, dropping a decision in sudden victory to Nic Veling of Wisconsin. At 165 pounds Iowa placed two other wrestlers, Joseph Gunther at 3rd and Jeremiah Moody at 5th. At 185 pounds Iowa placed one wrestler in Cash Wilke, who took home third. The Hawkeyes sent a total of ten wrestlers to the open.
The Panthers also had a pretty successful day, crowing the same number of champions as Iowa. Jacob Schwarm took home first at 125, Taylor Lujan at 174, and JJ Everard at heavyweight. Other place winners for UNI came at 141, where Tyler Willers took home third and149, where Hunter Washburn took fourth. At 157 and 165 pounds Paden Moore and Isiah Patton took home second, respectively to round out the winners for UNI.
