Iowa Hawkeye sophomore Brandon Sorensen has been named the Big Ten conference’s wrestler of the week for his performance at the 2015 Mildands championships, which ended with him downing #3 ranked Jason Tsirtsis of Northwestern in the finals. The win capped off a 6-0 week en route to the Hawkeye’s highest finish at the prestigious tournament.

This award mirrors last season, when Sorensen was also named Big Ten wrestler of the week after he defeated Tsirtsis for the first time in his career when the two teams met for a dual in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. All together this is the third time Sorensen has received the award in his career.

Sorensen becomes the second Hawkeye on the season to earn the conference award, joining junior Sammy Brooks, who won back in November.

The Hawkeyes will resume action this weekend as they hit the road to face conference foes Illinois on Friday and Northwestern on Sunday. That means that we could once again see a Sorensen-Tsirtsis rematch.

Sorensen shares his honor with Penn State freshman Bo Nickal, who captured the 174 pound Southern Scuffle title.

This will be the fifth career meeting between the two wrestlers, and the series is evenly split 2-2. Sorensen’s win over Tsirtsis at the Midlands actually earned him Big Ten Wrestler of the Week honors. […]
