The 1A schools came up big in the first round of the Battle of Waterloo tournament with 1A’s #1 ranked Lisbon defeating 3A’s #10 ranked Epworth, Western Dubuque 42-21 in Bracket A, and 1A’s #3 ranked Don Bosco pulling off the upset over 3A’s #5 ranked Cedar Rapids Prairie on criteria.
Lisbon started the day as the top seed in their bracket and Lions advanced in the first round 72-6 over Columbus Catholic. Lisbon advanced to the bracket finals by defeating 3A Iowa City West 50-26, picking up falls from Clay McCoy (126), #1 Carter Happel (145), Bryce Werdeman (170), Dakota O’Connor (220), Cobe Siebrecht (106), Ryne Mohrfeld (113), and #9 Cooper Siebrecht (120). Werdeman scored his fall over West’s #9 ranked Aaron Stumpf.
Lisbon was able to pick up another big victory in their bracket finals over Epworth picking up bonus in five of their victories. Scoring falls once again for Lisbon were Happel and Werdeman.
In the other bracket being contested it was the Dons of Don Bosco scoring the upset over Prairie, who was the No. 1 seed, 28-28. The Dons started their run with a 51-24 defeat of Iowa City High, and then a 45-26 defeat over 2A’s #4 ranked Crestwood to set up a showdown with Five Season Duals champion Prairie.
There the Dons upperweights proved too much for Prairie with Bosco winning five consecutive matches from 145-182, getting falls from #5 Chris Paulsen (160) and Walker Even (182). #2 Gable Fox (106) won a big match with Prairie freshman Conrad Braswell 11-6 to give the Dons a 28-19 lead with three matches to go. Jacob Tedrow (113), #3 Marcus England (120), and #7 Trenten Wennermark (126) all picked up decisions for Prairie to bring the dual to a tie – which was settled by the Dons scoring the most first points.
It was a big win for the Dons and according to the Waterloo Courier’s Jim Nelson, it also holds a little historical significance:
Schmitz wins and it will be on the second time in Battle of Waterloo history at No. 1 seed hasn't made championship round #iahswr
