Freshman Results from Finn Grinaker Open

Overall it was a pretty solid tournament by the freshman with Northern Iowa placing two wrestlers in the finals, and of the eight Panthers in the freshman open, all but one failed to place in the top three. Max Thomsen continues to show why he was considered the best overall recruit to come out of Iowa last year as teammate Hunter Washburn was the only wrestler to keep it close with the former four-time state champion on the way to his 149 title. Brandon Briggs of St. Cloud State was a torn in UNI’s side, as he took out both Tanner Rohweder and Jay Schwarm 125 pounds. Isaiah Patton had a nice day with his only loss coming to 2015 top 100 recruit Brett Bye of South Dakota State at 165 pounds.

Former Johnston standout Henry Pohlmeyer torched the 133 field on his way to the finals. After opening with a 10-4 decision over teammate Tyler Pieper, he strung together four falls to reach the top of his bracket.

Beaver head coach Jeff Breese has to be excited about his team’s performance with four of his freshman bringing home top six honors and another former Johnston standout Shane Vaughan, brought home top honors for Buena Vista with a third place performance.
