Hawkeye Wrestling Club’s Brent Metcalf joined Richard Immel on USA Wrestling’s bonus point podcast to talk about wrestling in the upcoming World Championships. Bonus points is a part of the Mat Talk Online Network, which is the media company that Jason Bryant formed.

On making his fourth World Team: “The biggest thing is that it’s time. I mean it’s time to go and get the things that I want, which is a gold medal…Time is slipping away and that’s not saying I am going to retire next year, but what it is saying is that you’re giving yourself a lot more opportunities to wrestle more guys.”

On the Iowa team from his day and what they need to do to get back on top: “Here’s the thing, I think we got a lot of good things going. We had to get our leadership squared away. We had some good individuals…You have to set the standard high and we just haven’t got it done when it comes time to get it done. To do that you need individual national champions and you need guys who fall short of that to come back and place high in the tournament…I think that you’re going to see that change, and you were starting to see it last year to an extent and I think it will continue.”

Something we talked about on the Potentially Dangerous podcast this week was Vince Turk possibly making a name for himself and starting at 141 as a true freshman, I think Brent cryptically may be hinting at the same thing: “We got a couple spots that need to be filled. 141 is probably a glaring one. Are we going to fill that with in-house guys – and by in-house I mean guys who are maybe household names already – or is it going to be someone new?”
