Fargo Junior Freestyle Session III Results

Team Iowa’s Junior squad was hit pretty hard this morning as only six wrestlers will be advancing to the All-American round.

Four Iowans have made it to tonight’s semifinal round, although two of them will face each other. Two of the nation’s top 145 pounds wrestlers Max Thomsen and Fredy Stroker are set to square off in the semifinals. Thomsen has looked the best to this point, as he has recorded five technical falls, and is outscoring the compeition 53-2. Stroker on the other hand has been almost as impressive, blanking the field 38-0, with three technical falls and a fall. In their previous freestyle meeting at the Junior World Team Trials, it was Stroker who was the victor.

Nolan Hellickson has also made the semifinals at 126 pounds. Four of his wins have come by technical fall and his quarterfinals win was the first time he gave up points, but he still came out on top 10-8. Tonight he will take on Navonte Demison of California.

Future UNI Panther Jacob Holschlag has made the 170 pound semifinals, and tonight he gets top 100 recruit Xavier Montalvo of Illinois. Holschlag opened with a fall, and followed that with an eight point win. Since then he has won his last two matches by one point and this semifinal should be a fantastic matchup.

The other two Iowans making the All-American round is former Cadet national champion Carter Happel (138) and Carter Isley (285). Happel’s only loss was to nationally ranked 2015 senion Boo Lewallen of Oklahoma, but since that match he has looked great. Isley, who was a Greco runner-up earlier this week, shocked some when he pinned nationally ranked (and fellow statesman) Gannon Gremnmel in the round of 12.
