Fargo Cadet Freestyle Session III Recap

Session III was concluded earlier this afternoon and Team Iowa put together a much stronger freestyle performance thus far as nine wrestlers have assured themselves of All-American status at the Fargo Dome.

Kyle Biscoglia (100) is one of those wrestlers remaining as he made the semifinals of his weight class. So far he has recorded four technical falls and has still not surrendered a point, and that includes his 11-0 quarterfinals win over Peter Ogunsanya of Illinois, who captured the Greco-Roman title on Monday.

Biscoglia will not be alone in this afternoon’s semifinals as Alex Thomsen (120) and Marcus Coleman (160) will join him as all three are considered title contenders, so it is no surprise they have made it this far. Coleman has been as dominant as Biscoglia so far, as he has three technical falls and two falls. Thomsen reached the quarterfinals of the Greco-Roman tournament as well before he lost and wound up placing fourth.

Three other wrestlers have assured themselves double All-American status and they are: Aden Reeves (106), Anthony Sherry (170), and Garrett Kubovec (195). Reeves lost just prior to the quarterfinals and aside from that match and his first consolation match that he won 20-10, he has shut every other opponent out. Sherry, who was Iowa’s highest finishing Cadet All-American in Greco (tied with Thomsen) and Kubovec each made the quarterfinals where each of them suffered their first freestyle loss.

Ben Sarasin (152) lost his first match of the tournament, but has since won six straight matches to lock up his All-American finish. Cooper Lawson (285) narrowly missed the stand in Greco-Roman, but that won’t be a problem in freestyle as he is 2-1 and locked up a top eight finish. Wyatt Wriedt (285) is the final All-American for Iowa and after losing in the second round he gutted out two straight wins to reach the round of 12. There he picked up a fall over fellow Iowan Spencer Trenary to finish on the stand.
