It was a solid day for the Junior Men as they picked up five Greco-Roman All-Americans which was important for a number of reasons. First off it doubled the All-Americans from a year ago when Brenden Baker, Chase Straw, and Jake Marnin all finished on the stand. Also, last year the Greco team finished a disappointing 20th, but this year they were able to secure a top ten finish (seventh to be exact). Also, Carter Isley is the first Iowan to make the Greco finals since Marnin did so back in 2013.

Unfortunately, despite Isley having a strong run to the finals, he was unable to get his offense going in the finals where he lost 2-1 to Dante Jiovenetta of Florida. Finishing runner-up at any national tournament is nothing to get down about and as it stands right now he is the highest placing Iowan so far (Rachel Watters is tied with Isley, but will wrestle in the finals tonight for Junior Women’s Freestyle).

Drew West put together a solid debut in Greco coming up from the Cadets where he was a runner-up a year ago. West was dominant winning six matches by technical fall and a seventh win came by fall over a nationally ranked Danny Vega. It was discussed in the preview that if Iowa was to improve it’s Greco performance from 2014, West would play a very important role and he scored the second most points among Iowans.

Aaron Meyer was able to continue a six year streak in which Southeast Polk has had at least one Greco-Roman All-American by taking fourth at 145 pounds. Committed to the University of Iowa he joins a growing contingent of Greco wrestlers in that room.

Iowa got a trio of All-Americans at 152, and chief among them was Chase Straw who took eighth a year ago at this same weight. It was also noted how important Straw would be for the Greco team. Straw took out future Iowa State teammate Dan Kelly in the fifth place match, but Kelly looked strong picking up two technical falls and is up two weight classes from his weight class he competed for his Cedar Falls team at the state tournament. Colton Clingenpeel rounded things out with a eighth place finish.
