Both Iowa and Iowa State had a few out of state recruits competing at the Fargo high school championships this weekend, and two of them were able to finish on the stand in their weight classes.
Competing in the Cadets was Jason Renteria of Illinois, who is committed to the University of Iowa. Only going to be a junior, Renteria had a solid tournament taking third in Greco, after not really focusing on the style for the last three years. His only loss in the tournament was to the eventual champion Patrick Ramirez of California in the semifinals.
Renteria amassed six technical falls, including one over Iowan Keaton Geerts in the quarterfinals. The only match that Renteria did not win by technical fall was against Blaine Martinez of Texas in the third place match, which he won 6-4.
Another Hawkeye, this one a 2015 recruit Jeremiah Moody, who had a strong start to the tournament by going 4-0 to reach the semifinals of the 160 pound weight class. A double Cadet All-American in 2014 Moody has looked pretty solid, outscoring his opponents 40-21 – and that includes his 12-2 loss in the semifinals. Moody wound up taking third in his first Junior tourament and continues to be a real interesting prospect.
Iowa State also had a recruit competing in Colston DiBlasi of Missouri, who went 2-2 in the Junior Greco-Roman tournament at 160 pounds.
