Add another one to the list.

Yesterday, one of Iowa’s own, Cullan Schriever was one of eight wrestlers who were able to win USA Wrestling’s Triple Crown in the Kid’s division. Schriever won his folkstyle national title in Cedar Falls in the Spring, and won the Greco-Roman title earlier this week. While Schriever was the only Iowan to win a Schoolboy Triple Crown, the state also saw Daniel Max Magayna win an Intermediate Triple Crown.

Just a day after blasting three of his five opponents for his 77 pound Greco national title, Schriever was even more impressive as he won all five of his freestyle bouts by technical fall and only surrendered four points on the day. Racking up technical falls is nothing new for Schriever, just look at his Schoolboy National Duals results where he went 16-0 across both freestyle and Greco-Roman. In those matches, only one of them did not end in technical fall, but all eight of his freestyle matches did.

Schriever trains at the Sebolt Wrestling Academy, where he is coached by four-time Iowa high school state champion, TJ Sebolt.

Iowa had another Schoolboy wrestler in search of the Triple Crown, but a first round upset of Joey Bianchi over Cade DeVos at 105 pounds ended the hope for Iowa to land two on the list. After a solid performance in Greco-Roman, DeVos was looking to be in good shape to three-peat. His first round opponent, the aforementioned Bianchi, he had defeated the day before by a score of 6-2 in the Greco quarterfinals. Bianchi would find a way to upset the nationally ranked DeVos by a score of 5-5, winning on criteria for being the last wrestler to score. After losing in the very first round, DeVos was able to come back for fourth.

Daniel Max Magayna needed just three matches to complete his Triple Crown at 87 pounds. He put on a show winning all three by technical fall and allowed a total of four points in the three matches on the way to his title.

Also capturing freestyle national titles for Iowa were: Timothy Koester (Bantam 55) and Dreshaun Ross (Bantam 75+). Ross was able to double up on national titles this weekend, winning the Greco-Roman title the day before.

Iowa also placed four additional wrestlers into the finals at their weight and they were: Blake Fox (Bantam 55), Anders Kittelson (Intermediate 60), Carter Fousek (Novice 70), and Drake Ayala (Schoolboy 70). Fox just missed out on doubling up national titles on the weekend, but his Iowan counterpart Koester was able to best him 12-0 in the finals.
