Today marks the first day of competition for the Schoolboy National Duals which are held in Indiana. Team Iowa sent over one team, and on it they sent a star studded team which includes four AAU state champions and an additional three state finalist.
To start off in Pool action, Iowa picked up a big 52-15 win over the Indiana Blue team in the quarterfinals. Iowa picked up six wins by fall or technical fall over Indiana Blue and among those winners were state champions Cade DeVos, Adam Allard, and Cullan Schriever.
Their semifinal match against Team Illinois didn’t go as well, as our neighbors to the east defeated Iowa 62-13 with only nationally ranked Schriever and DeVos picking up wins for Team Iowa. Last year the Illinois team took second at this tournament in Greco-Roman.
That setup a match with Team Utah in the Pool A consolation semifinals. Things got off to a rough start when Iowa’s DeVos took a loss at 105, but Lance Runyon responded with a technical fall to give Iowa a team lead. Utah responded with five wins in a row to take back and widen their lead. Rowan Udell then put Iowa back on the board with a technical fall at 175. Utah fired back with a fall at 190 pounds and added forfeits at 210 and 265 to really push their lead with 5 matches to go.
Drake Ayala, Cullan Schriever, and Adam Allard made a good run for Iowa winning by decision, technical fall, and technical fall making the score 48-26. Despite the three big wins Iowa was officially eliminated in the dual. Utah ended the dual with a 64-26 win, and the bumped Iowa to the fifth place match in their pool.
