Four Iowa prep wrestlers headed west for today’s Freestyle portion of the Western Regional championships. Southeast Polk wrestlers Aaron Meyer (138) and Keegan Shaw (145) and Iowa City West wrestlers Tanner Rohweder (120) and Donovan Doyle (195) all tried their chances at winning freestyle titles and things got off to a pretty good start as three wrestlers made the quarterfinals, and only Shaw was knocked to the backside.

Tanner Rohweder opened things with a bye at 120 pounds and then stormed into his next match winning by 10-0 technical fall to earn his trip to the quarterfinals. The Southeast Polk boys also opened with tech falls with Meyer (138) winning 10-0 and Shaw (145) winning 11-0. Meyer followed that up with another 10-0 tech fall to reach the quarterfinals, but his teammate was unable to join him. With a 12-8 lead late into his match, Shaw wound up losing by fall in 5:38 to be the first Iowan knocked to the backside. Big man Donovan Doyle wasted little time in his match as he opened his day with a 10-0 fall to reach the quarterfinals of 195 pounds.

Rohweder kept the train rolling into his quarterfinal when he pinned Isaiah Mora (California) in 1:20 to make the semifinals and secure a top six finish at the tournament. Meyer duplicated the result with a fall of his own over Jake Douglas (Washington) in 2:45 to earn his All-American honor. After taking a 1-0 lead after the first period, Doyle looked to be in a good position, but fell in the second period to Danny Salas (California) by fall in 4:08.

Both Rohweder and Meyer charged into their finals with yet a pair of 10-0 tech falls, to give Iowa two finalist at the Regional. Rohweder was unable to cap off his weekend, as Jerry Mealey (Oregon) pinned the Iowa City West wrestler in the first. Future Hawkeye Meyer, however was able to close things out with a title, as he won his fourth match by technical fall, 14-3 over Daniel Coles.

On the backside Keegan Shaw made a strong rebound, winning 11-0 to keep his medal chances alive. However, in the next match Trysten Perales (Washington) scored six unanswered points to win 14-8 and end the wrestler’s day. Donovan Doyle rebounded from his quarterfinal loss by winning 10-0 tech fall and with that win Doyle locked up a sixth place. He the made it to the consolation finals with a 12-2 win over Lucas Olgiati (California). Doyle then won his third straight match in a row 20-10 over Blake Smith (Arizona) for third.
