Alburnett rides bonus wins to lead 1A field

IA Wrestle’s third #1 ranked team leads their respective class as Alburnett picked up eight bonus point wins on the first day to give the Pirates eight quarterfinalists for tomorrow afternoon’s session. #5 Ben Moyer (113), #9 Tucker Franklin (120), #7 Drake Halblom (126), Tanner Sloan (138), and #1 Conner Shulista (145) all earned falls and two time state champion Hunter Washburn (132), 152 Bryce Paul, and 170 #10 Austin Hoyle added major decisions. Alburnett finished with 28 points to close out the night session.

Four Dons will wrestle in tomorrow’s quarterfinals, including #5 Gable Fox (106), #3 Nick Mangrich (126), #7 Chris Paulsen (152), and #3 Zach Hickson (195). Fox, Paulsen, and Hickson all earned falls in their first round matches, and #8 Cole Fox (138) and TJ Even picked up falls in the consolation bracket to finish 21 points.

#2 Southeast Warren sits in third place with 20 points after the first round of wrestling, sending five wrestlers to the quarterfinals and getting a fall from Gabe Henderson (145) on the backside to keep six of their eight state qualifiers alive. Warren also got falls from #3 Brady Kyner (113), #4 Jake Hunerdosse (132, and #4 Ty Schneider (195).

State dual champion Clarion-Goldfield-Dows sits fourth with 19.5 points and have all six of their qualifiers alive. Twin #1 ranked brothers Justin (106) and Josh (126) won by technical fall and major decision respectively, and they also got falls from #5 Joel Haberman (32) and #6 Brady Brott (145).

Sibley-Ocheyedan sits 5th with 16 points as they sent five of their seven state qualifiers to tomorrow’s quarterfinals. #6 Dylan Schuck (132) and Trent Kruger (160) picked up a major, and #8 Garret Saylor added a fall at 145 for bonus point wins for Sibley. Heavyweight Houston Coleman won by injury default.
