Ross: It was a great opening weekend for the Cyclones as they brought home all of the ten titles at the Kaye Young Open. While the field might not have been as challenging as the MSU Open, there still were some good takeaways from the little tourney. The main thing that Iowa State fans can look at is how the in-the-room battles are going and that this tournament was a wrestle off of sorts. The thing to keep in mind is that these wrestlers are familiar with each other since they do scrap in the room everyday, so while this tournament’s results may not actually decide who the starter is at each toss-up weight, it certainly gives us the early leader.
For starters it looks like Kyle Larson is the leading man at 125. He was figured to be the man all along, but with Nathan Boston being one of the better recruits from last year’s class, fans were probably interested to see how the youngster measured up to the veteran. Larson answered the call and edged him in a close one. The same can be said at 157 as Luke Gottel seems to have gone up from 149 and taken the slight lead over redshirt freshman Danny Woiwor. At 149 we saw that Gabe Moreno appears to answer his weight bump from 141 very well, as he pinned freshman Briceno to take the lead at 149.
As I mentioned that this tournament probably doesn’t set the lineup in stone, but just gives fans a feel for how each Cyclone is doing against their in-room competition. A real test will take place this weekend as quite a few teams will head to Ames for the Harold Nichols Open and if we see similar results from the three main weight battles (125, 149, and 157) Cyclones fans can have a good feel with who their starter will be.
