The pre-seeds for the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational have been released with Northern Iowa’s Max Thomsen and Bryce Steiert claiming the top spot at 149 and 174 pounds, respectively. Thomsen finished seventh and Steiert, up a weight from last season, placed sixth at the tournament last season. 184 pounder Taylor Lujan is pre-seeded second, behind Zahid Valencia, the two-time defending national champion.
UNI also has seeded wrestlers in Jay Schwarm (fifth at 125 pounds) and Carter Isley (ninth at heavyweight).
Iowa State has a pair of wrestlers pre-seeded second in Alex Mackall at 125 pounds and Jarrett Degen at 149. Mackall and the first pre-seed, Jack Mueller from Virginia, have not wrestled, while Degen and Thomsen have wrestled four times in their careers and once already this year. Thomsen is 4-0 against the Cyclone, with a 12-7 win coming earlier this season at the Harold Nichols Open.
The Cyclones have seeded wrestlers in Ian Parker (sixth at 141), David Carr (third at 157), Marcus Coleman (12th at 174), Samuel Colbray (eighth at 184) and Gannon Gremmel (seventh at heavyweight).
