Add another title to the ever growing list of accomplishments for Spencer Lee, as the Iowa sophomore blanked Virginia’s Jack Mueller 5-0 in the 125-pound NCAA finals. Lee’s finals appearance extended Iowa’s streak with having a NCAA finalist to 30 years and is the third straight season in which the Hawks have crowned a national champion.
Joining Lee on the podium were five other teammates: Austin DeSanto (133), Pat Lugo (149), Kaleb Young (157), Alex Marinelli (165), and Jacob Warner (197). It’s the most All-Americans in a single season since 2016 for Tom Brands. All six All-Americans will return next season.
Overall the team will bring home a fourth place trophy finishing behind team champions Penn State, runner-up Ohio State, and Okalhoma State. The Hawkeyes outpaced Big Ten foe Michigan by 13.5 points in order to claim the last team trophy slot.*
(*Cornell’s Max Dean could push the Big Red past Michigan for the fifth place team finish)
Last year was a historic moment for Lee as he became the first true freshman to win a NCAA title since Lincoln McIlravy won his title back in 1993. In winning his second title he becomes the first wrestler to win two titles since Matt McDonough won his second title at 125 pounds in 2012.
