Big Ten Tournament Session I Recap

Iowa has placed four of their wrestlers into tonight’s semifinal round at the Big Ten Championships and currently sit in sixth place. Advancing to the semifinals were all three of Iowa second seeded wrestlers Spencer Lee (125), Austin DeSanto (133), and Alex Marinelli (165) as well as freshman and #3 seed Jacob Warner (197). The Hawks still have all ten wrestlers alive, with the remaining six wrestlers all in contention to place in the top eight with another win in the bloodround.

With four semifinalists the Hawkeyes have secured at least three NCAA qualifiers in Lee, DeSanto, and Marinelli. All wrestlers who reach the semifinals are guaranteed a top six finish. The 197-pound weight class is only guarantee the top five medalists, which means the freshman will need to win at least one more match this weekend. Iowa could secure several more qualifiers with a bloodround win from Max Murin (141), Kaleb Young (157), Mitch Bowman (174), and Cash Wilcke (197). Both Pat Lugo (149) and Sam Stoll (285) will need to place in the top six and seven respectively at their weights to secure a NCAA bid.
