Fareway Stores, Inc. and Powerade present the Dan Gable Wrestler of the Year Awards in coordination with IAwrestle and IWCOA.

The IWCOA accepted nominations from high school coaches for student athletes in each of the three state wrestling classes, regardless of their year in school and weight class. A committee selected by the IWCOA provided IAwrestle with a list of 15 finalist candidates for public input. That vote brought in over 60,000 votes and awarded Nelson Brands (3A), Michael Blockhus (2A) and Brian Sadler (1A) each an extra vote towards the committee vote to reach our top 10.

Fans have the ability to vote once per day for their top wrestler in each class until February 7th, where votes will be tallied and the top voted wrestler will receive an extra vote towards the IWCOA committee vote. The three finalists will be announced prior the state semi-finals on Friday the 16th and will be invited to the season end luncheon gala at the Iowa Hall of Pride on Thursday, February 22nd at 11:30 a.m., where a winner will be announced in each class.

The two runner-up student athletes in each class will each receive finalist award plaques. A duplicate Wrestler of the Year trophy and duplicate Wrestler of the Year runner-up plaques will be provided to each high school where finalists attend, for permanent placement in the high school trophy case.

Fans can vote online at IAwrestle.com.

  1. The last two or three days I have tried to vote for Brian Sadler i get a message that I have already voted. That’s not fair.

    1. every time i voted i noticed the winner votes went up by 2 or 3 votes at the same time. I think they were cheating!

  2. Why does it keep telling me my vote has aready been counted? You can vote once every 24 hours. Right?

  3. Again with voting in the 2A group waiting the 24hours it still tells me it’s already counted my votes….This young man is family and has missed out on lots deserved votes….Don’t tell me to clear cookies or the other thing I think cause I have no idea what or how to do this. I vote from my Android 6 Samsung….

  4. Any sort of pole or award like this should not get anyone too riled up. Because of the voting methods it’s generally meaningless. It’s cool to get nominated to begin with but everything since that point is nothing more than a technologically dependent popularity contest. Whether your a fan of someone getting a lot of votes, or too little, you can pretty much be assured that almost none of them are coming from neutral parties who really think that particular wrestler is most deserving. Almost everyone in here voting is doing it for the local kid, or a favor to a friend.

As far as the voting issues, there are some pretty simple explanations for some, and other ones I can’t quite figure out. Personally I work IT at a fairly large company. This company uses an external service to help shield from certain DDOS attacks which basically scrubs the IP information from any traffic to external sources. So every single vote that would come out of this company is going to appear as the same IP address. Meaning that out of thousands of employees only one vote per day could be cast from it’s network. Some other companies and schools will also be like this, some wont. So especially if we are talking school systems, that could give huge advantages to schools that don’t have systems like this in place.

Other things that don’t seem to be explained though are in situations where private and cell networks are saying vote counted for several days straight. Personally I have been monitoring this for about 4 days and my cell phone, along with 3 different devices at home all say that my vote has already been counted for the day. At worst, my home would have one IP and my phone would have one, meaning 2 votes per day over days would be 8 votes. I’ve only been able to get a single vote through in that period, which was 2 days ago.

In the end, there really isn’t a good way to make something like this accurate or meaningful, but it might be better in the future to just open it up completely so there aren’t bugs and issues that keep people from feeling that their votes aren’t being counted at all. Maybe someone complaining that someone else was better at voting a lot, is better than people feeling like they are being unfairly kept from voting? Just some thoughts.

  5. Tanner is an upstanding kid and a VERY hard worker both in school and out. Everyone that knows him is voting. I also have voted and it doesn’t tell me that it has been counted.

  6. Alburnett has obviously found a way to cheat! HACKERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    BOO YOU!!

    1. Ever stop to think that maybe, just maybe, he has an amazing support system? That his family, friends, and community have rallied behind him and are voting? There are numerous posts by numerous individuals sharing the link to vote daily. Tanner is an upstanding young man that takes pride in what he does, and cheating isn’t one of those. Take a breath and realize accusing someone anonymously over the Internet doesn’t make you a bigger person. If you are so confident in winning yourself, rally your friends and family around the individual you feel should win. At the end of the day – it’s an online voting poll and doesn’t determine the winner of the competition.

        1. Tanner got 7000 more votes the second round than the first round where did all the votes come from something seem funny to me?

    2. Or we have a strong community that votes for him daily and a school that supports him and votes daily as well.

      1. Why didn’t they support him the first around that is what’s confusing to me?

        1. Lol…so if someone didnt vote first round than they arent allowed to second round? The more it is shared the more votes. Maybe the family and friends keep sharing it over and over and more are seeing it now which will increase votes. I see a daily reminder to go vote in my facebook feed.

    3. No they haven’t. You must be unaware that their posts are being shared in Illinois, South Carolina, Missouri, Arkansas, and even as far as Taiwan! This is an upstanding kid with upstanding friends and family.

    5. No hacking by Alburnett. Just a great fan base, support system, and family & friends. They must not teach good sportsmanship where ever this poster is. 🙁

  7. I logged into a computer that I haven’t ever voted with, in a city I haven’t been in for at least 3 days yet it says my vote has already been counted. This poll is not working well at all. It is clearly not accurate nor a fair representation of the votes.

    1. It is a desktop computer that is hard-wired, not a laptop or anything portable. It never moves.

  8. I have been voting for all 3 classes daily after the 24 hours and 1A is the only one that says already counted your vote, 2A and 3A go through!! Something is wrong with this voting poll!!!! FIX THIS!!!!

  9. I vote for all 3 classes, at the same time and 1A is the only one that says already counted your vote, 2A and 3A votes go through!! Something is WRONG with this voting poll!!!! FIX THIS!!

    1. Been voting for Brian everyday but its not counting my vote even after waiting 24 hours. This poll is rigged.

  10. […] Nelson Brands ’18 has successfully moved on from the first round of voting for the Dan Gable Mr. Wrestler Award and needs the help of voters to move onto the final round where a committee will vote on the winner. To advance, Brands needs to remain in the top three. Brands has been a serious contender for this award due to his continued dominance in the Iowa High School State Wrestling Meet as a two-time state champion. Brands also led the state last year in takedowns, boasting 454 going into the state tournament. To cast your vote for Brands, click here.  […]

  11. interesting comment under 3A….

That Shapiro kid is using a bot to vote…. There is some kind of have going on. At 1am hundreds of people were voting for him?? I don’t believe it! Cheaters never win.

    1. ‘That Shapiro kid’ doesn’t care about the poll. Maybe you should think twice before posting slander.

      1. Doesn’t it strike you as very odd that the kids’ votes came overnight, all at once, and catapulted him to the top? Seems like a bot to me. Also odd that his lead has been held by almost exactly the numbers of overnight votes he got. SOMEBODY cares very much about him winning, whether it’s him or not. Shady.

        1. Reality check by a mom….Don’t attack these kids for a more or less meaningless poll. It is sickening to listen to you over competitive adults tear down these kids… remember at the end of the day this is getting voted for by a qualified panel of coaches and I’m sure they will pick the most deserving wrestler regardless of the poll or any other “hooks” they may have !!!

          1. Agree! It’s a social media poll. It’s meant to bring awareness and fire fans up. These kids don’t control who votes – don’t criticize them. I’m sure the panel will pick the person who is most deserving. Let’s be proud of all the kids in the polls have accomplished!

        1. Maybe he doesn’t care that much but his adult does. I don’t have a rat in this race so IDGAF, but there is something shady with Joel Shapiro votes. They catapulted overnight at 1am. A thousand people aren’t up voting at 1am. That is ridiculous!

    2. That “Shapiro kid”… happens to have THE military support. Just so happens that WE don’t work (for your freedom of speech I might add) in your time zone or have a cushy 8 – 5. These are kids. Enough of the nasty talk and sour grapes.

  12. Won’t let me vote…Says it has already counted my vote on my first try and it’s done that several times…What’s a solution?

      1. i have waited well over the 24 hours for voting, and have also tried voting on a device I have never used before and still says my vote already counted. Voted at 6 A.M. yesterday morning, tried this morning at 7:30, and nothing. I even cleared my cache and cookies like all these comments state and still nothing. I believe it to be a glitch going on, and not a persons device!

  13. I have been trying to vote for someone and it keeps telling me I already voted. What’s going on???? There is a lot of people they are having the same problem. Please help!!!!

      1. I to am having the same issue as others. Its states each device and I have 4 of them to vote from. I can get one vote in and then the others say my vote has already been counted. Can someone please explain how you can vote on different devices daily.

        1. The vote counter tracks your IP address, and blocks a vote from that same address within 24 hours. So if you vote at 8PM on Tuesday, you would not be able to cast your next vote on that same device until 8PM Wednesday. It resets based off the time of day you voted.

          1. Well I just used my wife’s I-Phone to cast a vote which I haven’t used in several days and it said my vote has already been cast. So how can that be with it being well over the 24 hour period.

            1. 2 more days now that I keep getting the same message: “We already counted your vote” and that’s on 3 different devices. Yes I waited longer than 24 hours…..so much for be able to cast votes.

              1. I would say this would be due to some issue with your computer settings, not the poll itself. I was able to cast a vote for Trey yesterday and this morning. You can try clearing your cookies and see if that helps.

  14. Something is wrong with this… I have been voting for 1A Brian Sadler Jesup every day during the 2nd round and it is not counting my daily vote. It says “Thank you, we have already counted your vote”. Well im voting daily and my number clearly isnt added. It says i cam vote once per day but it isnt letting me

  15. What schools were included cause Billy Janzer from Delsea High School in Franklinville, NJ should be incyas he’s a state champion as a junior and he’s doing well in his senior season
