Five Matches to Watch at Ed Hadenfeldt Invitational

There should be a lot of great wrestling this weekend at the Ed Hadenfeldt Invitational in Solon. There will be 24 ranked wrestlers competing including 7 guys ranked either 1st or 2nd in state. IAwrestle will be streaming the action for you live on the season pass.

Below I highlight 5 of the possible matchups that I am looking forward to seeing.

120 – #1 (2A) Aden Reeves (Albia) vs #1 (1A) Cael Happel (Lisbon)

If you follow high school wrestling in Iowa then these two don’t need any introductions. They are both ranked #1, Reeves in class 2A and Happel in class 1A, and both are also defending state champions. Reeves comes in with a little more experience in big matches but don’t sleep on Happel and his physicality. Both like to push the pace and score points so there should be no shortage of action.

120 – #4 (2A) Caleb Fuessley (Center Point-Urbana) vs #5 (2A) Zeb Gnida (Solon)

Fuessley is off to a good start after placing at state last season. Gnida had an up and down season last year but is off to a hot start as well and looks to continue that trend. Both are ranked in the top 5 in class 2A but come in with something to prove. They should provide solid challenges for Reeves and Happel in the semifinals but we could see this match on the backside if all goes according to rankings.

126 – #6 (2A @ 120) Carter Weeks (Vinton-Shellsburg) vs #10 (2A) Landon Turner (Albia)

Weeks had a very solid junior season and placed 5th at 106 pounds. However, he grew in the offseason and has been adjusting to wrestling at 120/126. Turner missed last season with an injury so he has flown a little under the radar. His talent has never been in question and he is off to a solid start this year. This will be a solid test for Turner against the veteran Weeks.

182 – #2 (1A) Garet Sims (Iowa Valley) vs #7 (2A) Mike Hoyle (Solon)

Hoyle qualified for the state tournament last season and helped Solon to there first team state title. He has been wrestling well so far this season and has some big wins already. He could face a very stiff test this weekend in #2 ranked Garet Sims who placed 5th in class 1A last season.

285 – Andy Lopez (West Liberty) vs Mitchell Huisenga (Washington)

I know that neither guy is ranked (both have been close) and regardless of this match outcome #3 Tyler Linderbaum of Solon is still the heavy favorite in the finals. However, this is a good matchup that could have big district/state tournament implications. With #6 Lunsford of Fairfield also in the district this could be the match to see who qualifies for the big show in Des Moines. Lopez did win this matchup earlier this year but Huisenga has had some really nice wins since then as well. If West Liberty wants to bring home a trophy from the state tournament getting Lopez there would be a huge boost.
